Drill pipe is a core component of the drill string, connecting surface equipment to the drill bit and transmitting torque and weight on bit. According to relevant data, approximately 20–30% of downhole incidents in global exploration and drilling projects are attributable to drill pipe; fortunately, most of these can be prevented through routine inspection and maintenance.
Below is a practical guide to drill pipe maintenance and upkeep, designed to help your team establish standardized procedures, extend equipment life, and reduce operational risks.
Routine Inspections: Preventing Problems Before They Arise
Standardizing routine inspections is the foundation for ensuring drill pipe safety.
Visual Inspection: This should be performed before and after each use. Focus on checking the tube body for dents, cracks, and excessive wear, as well as the threads for damage, galling, or over‑wear. Also, look for signs of corrosion, rust, or pitting on the tube’s surface.
Nondestructive Testing (NDT): For internal defects that are invisible to the naked eye, regular professional inspections are required.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Used to detect internal cracks and measure wall thickness.
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT): Primarily used to detect surface and near-surface cracks in pipe bodies.
Dimension and Thread Inspection: Regularly calibrate and measure the drill pipe’s outer diameter (O.D.), inner diameter (I.D.), and wall thickness to ensure they remain within the specified tolerances. At the same time, carefully inspect the threads and couplings to confirm they are clean, free of debris, and undamaged.
Hardbanding Inspection: If the drill pipe joint is equipped with a hardband, inspect it for wear. Replace it promptly if excessive wear or damage is detected.
Cleaning and Lubrication: Details Determine Lifespan
Thorough Cleaning: After each use, the drill pipe should be thoroughly cleaned. Use a high-pressure water jet or a dedicated cleaning agent to remove drilling fluid, cuttings, and other residues from both the inner and outer surfaces of the pipe, preventing them from drying and accelerating corrosion and wear. In particular, the threaded sections must be cleaned meticulously.
Proper lubrication: After cleaning, apply a specialized thread compound evenly to the threads. This effectively reduces friction and helps prevent galling and rusting. For new drill pipes, before first use, it is recommended to perform 3–5 make‑and‑break operations at a low speed of 10–15 rpm, removing the old compound and applying fresh compound after each cycle to allow the threads to seat properly.
Thread Protection: The Most Vulnerable Component
The threads are the most vulnerable part of the drill pipe and require special protection.
Use thread protectors: During transportation and storage, thread protectors must be fitted to both ends of the drill pipe. This effectively reduces corrosion, prevents impact damage, and thereby extends the service life of the drill pipe.
Distinguish between storage grease and running grease: Be sure to differentiate between storage compound and running compound. Before use, thoroughly remove any storage grease from the fittings, then apply running grease.
Storage and Handling: Prevent Secondary Injury
Improper storage and handling are common causes of drill pipe damage.
Proper Storage: Drill pipes should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from moisture and corrosive substances. The pipe bodies must be placed on dedicated pipe racks with adequate support to prevent direct contact with the ground.
Long-term storage protection: If stored for more than six months, apply a rust‑preventive paint or rust‑inhibiting oil to ensure corrosion protection.
Safe Handling: During handling, use specialized tools such as pipe clamps, cushioning rings, and lifting lugs to prevent damage caused by pipe‑to‑pipe impacts. When moving drill pipes, ensure they remain horizontal and verify that thread protectors are securely in place.
Regular Testing and Tiered Management
Establish tiered records: Create electronic or paper-based files for each batch of drill pipes, documenting their specifications, usage history, and inspection and maintenance records. This facilitates full lifecycle management.
Implement tiered management: Based on the degree of wear, drill rods are typically classified as follows:
Grade N (New Tube): Close to original factory quality.
P Grade (Premium Quality): Slightly worn but still usable.
Class C (Worn Pipe): Severely worn, nearing the end of its service life. When wall thickness wear exceeds 20% of the original wall thickness, derating should be considered; if it exceeds 30%, outright scrapping is recommended.
Operational Precautions
Control of tensile load: When addressing stuck‑pipe incidents, the applied tensile load shall not exceed 80% of the tubing’s yield strength.
Avoid mixing new and old drill pipes: New and old drill pipes have different mechanical properties; mixing them can lead to stress concentrations and increase the risk of failure.
Note the bending radius: During operation, do not exceed the drill rod’s recommended bending radius to prevent permanent deformation or fatigue damage.
Recommended tightening torque: Never exceed the specified recommended torque. Excessive torque can damage the threads, while insufficient torque may cause the joint to loosen.
Special operating condition handling: After drilling into formations containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), drill pipes must undergo nondestructive testing and hydrostatic pressure testing, and may only be reused once safety has been confirmed.
In summary, drill pipe maintenance is a systematic endeavor that requires establishing a closed-loop process, encompassing routine inspections, cleaning and lubrication, thread protection, proper storage and transportation, and periodic testing. Consistently implementing these best practices is essential for extending drill pipe life and ensuring safe, efficient drilling operations.
