Coalbed methane (CBM) / gas drainage drilling features shallow wells but complex well trajectories. To maximize extraction efficiency, operators often use cluster wells, horizontal wells, and multi-lateral wells. In soft shallow formations, the drill string is subjected to extremely high bending stress and torque. In addition, while CBM fluids are not highly corrosive, the high solids content in drilling mud and narrow annular clearance create a high risk of differential sticking. Moreover, the risk of gas outburst requires smooth, controllable drilling, demanding highly reliable drill string components.
