In oil and gas drilling operations, drill pipe is one of the most costly and high‑risk procurement items. Selecting the wrong supplier can, at best, result in delayed deliveries and incomplete documentation; at worst, it may lead to the delivery of substandard drill pipe into the wellbore—with consequences ranging from drill‑string failure and downhole incidents to the complete scrapping of the entire well.

But in reality, price is the easiest figure to compare—and also the one most likely to lead to poor decisions. Two quotes may specify the same steel grade and the same dimensions, yet one comes with a complete MTC report, end-to-end traceability records, and a confirmed delivery date, while the other—cheaper, arriving later, and lacking proper documentation.

So, how do you select truly reliable partners from among numerous suppliers? The following 10 criteria are provided for procurement decision-makers’ reference.

Criterion One: API Certification — A Non-Negotiable, Mandatory Requirement

API 5DP is the internationally recognized standard for drill pipe manufacturing and serves as the fundamental prerequisite for purchasing drill pipes. Suppliers must hold a valid API 5DP license, and their drill pipe products must be manufactured in accordance with the latest edition of API Spec 5DP (PSL‑2 or higher) and bear the API mark.

In addition to API 5DP, it should also be verified whether the supplier holds:

API 7-1 (Rotary Drill String Components)

API Q1 (Quality Management System)

ISO 9001 (International Quality Management System)

Regional certifications (such as Russia’s GOST, Europe’s NS-1, etc.)

Verification method: Require suppliers to provide the API mark license number and verify its validity through the API official website’s certification verification system. Certification serves as the “first filter” for assessing a supplier’s capabilities. However, it is important to note that certification documents represent only a “snapshot”—they confirm that the system was compliant at the time of audit but do not guarantee consistent performance in day-to-day production. Therefore, certification is a starting point, not an end goal.

Criterion Two: Factory Audit — Seeing Is Believing

API certification demonstrates the existence of a system, but it does not guarantee that the factory can consistently and reliably deliver products that meet your specific requirements. The factory’s actual production conditions—such as equipment maintenance, fluctuations in raw material quality, and the skill levels of operating personnel—can only be fully assessed through an on-site audit.

Verification method:

On-site audit: Observe whether the factory layout is clearly zoned (raw materials, production, work-in-progress, finished goods, and quality inspection) and whether the premises are clean and well-organized—disorderly facilities often signal lax management.

Equipment Inspection: Verify the presence of key production facilities, such as CNC machining centers, heat treatment furnaces, and non-destructive testing equipment.

Personnel Interviews: Conducted discussions with frontline production workers and quality inspectors to gain insights into actual operational procedures.

Third-party audit: If on-site visits are not feasible, you may engage third-party organizations such as SGS or BV to conduct a factory audit.

Criterion Three: End-to-End Manufacturing Capability — Control Determines Reliability

Suppliers worth long-term collaboration are manufacturers that control the entire supply chain—from raw material procurement and production to logistics and delivery—keeping all processes under their own management. Vertically integrated manufacturers typically maintain comprehensive in-house facilities, including CNC machining, heat treatment, threading, and quality‑inspection laboratories. This level of integration reduces reliance on external suppliers and can shorten lead times by as much as 30%.

Verification method:

Confirm whether the supplier maintains a complete production chain—fittings forging, pipe-end upsetting, tube body heat treatment, friction welding, wear‑resistant strip cladding, and internal coating processing.

Assess whether its production capacity meets your bulk requirements.

Understand the brands and specifications of its key equipment (such as the tonnage of friction welding machines, the type of heat treatment furnaces, etc.).

Criterion Four: Quality Control System — From Raw Materials to Finished Products

A high-quality drill pipe manufacturer must not only hold certifications but also maintain a comprehensive quality management system that spans the entire production process. This includes:

Incoming raw material inspection: chemical composition analysis, metallographic examination

Process Control: Heat Treatment Temperature Recording, Welding Parameter Monitoring

Finished-product inspection: 100% nondestructive testing (ultrasonic + magnetic particle)

Nonconforming Product Handling: Are there clear procedures for isolation and disposition?

Manufacturers with a comprehensive quality management system that enables multi‑dimensional testing—such as hydrostatic pressure, nondestructive testing, hardness, and flow‑diameter measurements—before shipment can offer greater assurance of product quality.

Verification method:

Request to review the quality manual and process control records.

Confirm that the testing equipment has been calibrated and is accompanied by a valid certificate.

Understand the handling procedures for nonconforming products.

Criterion Five: Documentation and Traceability — Every drill pipe must have an “identification card.”

This is the stage in procurement that is most easily overlooked yet most regretted afterward. Reliable suppliers can provide complete API 5CT/5DP certificates and mill test certificates (MTC) prior to shipment, with each drill pipe traceable back to its specific test data via the heat number. In contrast, unreliable suppliers will say, “We’ll submit the documents later”—only to leave them unreceived indefinitely.

Verification method:

MTC samples are required, confirming the inclusion of: chemical composition, mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation), and non-destructive testing results.

Confirm that the MTC type is at least EN 10204 3.1 (issued by the manufacturer’s quality assurance department).

Confirm that each furnace number corresponds one-to-one with the physical drill pipe, ensuring traceability.

Criterion Six: Delivery Records — The Ability to Deliver on Promises

No matter how impressive a supplier’s promised delivery timeline may seem, it’s far more telling to look at what they’ve actually delivered in the past. A reliable supplier will provide a written delivery window that aligns with your actual operational site and has contingency plans in place when that window is at risk. By contrast, an unreliable supplier typically only commits to “delivering to the central warehouse,” leaving you to handle transportation issues on your own.

Verification method:

Please provide the delivery records for the past 12 months.

Confirm whether the on-time delivery rate is above 95%.

Inquire about the measures to be taken in case of delayed delivery.

Find out whether there is actual delivery experience in your area.

Criterion 7: Technical Support and Customization Capabilities

Different well types and formations impose distinct requirements on drill pipes. A reputable supplier should be able to offer tailored recommendations on steel grade and thread type based on your specific operating conditions—rather than simply quoting a single specification and leaving the associated risks to the downhole environment.

In addition, the supplier’s customization capabilities are an important consideration: whether they can tailor the diameter, thread specifications, material, and other parameters to meet your specific requirements.

Verification method:

Inquire about the supplier’s technical team size and qualifications.

Please provide selection case studies for similar operating conditions.

Confirm whether custom non-standard specifications are supported.

Criterion 8: Third-Party Inspection Support

For critical projects or international procurement, third-party independent inspection is an effective risk-mitigation measure. Reputable suppliers should welcome and support on-site inspections conducted by third-party organizations such as SGS, BV, and TÜV.

Verification method:

Clearly specify third-party inspection requirements during the quotation phase.

Confirm whether the supplier accepts an EN 10204 Type 3.2 MTC (third-party verified).

Understand the supplier’s experience of collaborating with third-party inspection agencies.

Criterion 9: Communication Efficiency and Response Speed

In fast-paced drilling projects, communication delays translate into costs. Prioritize vendors with response times of four hours or less.

Verification method:

Record the response time upon first contact.

Assess its multilingual communication capabilities (whether it supports English, Russian, and other target-market languages).

Confirm whether 24/7 emergency technical support is provided.

Criterion 10: Industry Experience and Track Record of Success

A supplier’s industry experience directly shapes its understanding of quality, delivery, and risk. Many major oil and gas companies require, in their tender processes, that suppliers demonstrate a track record of successfully executing at least three comparable projects within the past five years.

Verification method:

Request to provide the customer list and export records.

Confirm whether there are any successful case studies in your region or for similar operating conditions.

Understand your customers’ repurchase rate—high repurchase rates are a direct reflection of customer satisfaction.

Choosing a drill‑pipe supplier is not about “buying a product”; it’s about selecting a long‑term partner. Price is the most readily comparable metric—and also the one most likely to lead to poor decisions. A single delayed casing string can leave a drilling rig idle for days, and the daily cost of waiting for tubing on an onshore rig can easily offset any “savings” offered by an initial low bid.
