What Is Drill Pipe Buckling and How to Prevent It

Drill pipe buckling can be a nasty thing. When tubing (casing or drill pipe) flexes, it can become useless - or worse, it can lead to other problems, such as separating the pipe column through time-consuming fishing operations and expensive repairs.

How does it happen?

Drill pipe buckling is caused by applying too much force or weight to the top of the drill pipe. Buckling can happen in many different situations, but let me give you a realistic scenario.

Suppose we are digging a new well. From the rig to the sea floor, there is only water and fish. This means that when we start drilling, our drill column is not protected or supported in any way.

Maybe we are on a tight schedule and the superintendent drill is under a lot of pressure. Maybe he wasn't careful enough, or his calculations weren't good enough.

Let him apply too much WOB (weight on bit) or TOB (torque on bit) and the steel could bend and be permanently damaged and eventually break. All pipes are flexible to some extent, but at some point damage will occur.

Consequences of Tube Buckling

A common consequence is the breakage of the drill pipe and the presence of fish in the hole. Losing a BHA (bottomhole assembly) is actually a waste of tens of thousands of dollars as you lose expensive high-tech logging equipment and directional drilling tools.

Fishing is also a time consuming process and sometimes you don't catch a fish. Then you have to decide whether to abandon the well and finish it sooner (if you can use the shallower part of the wellbore to reach your goal), or pour cement on top of the fish and drill a sidetrack around it.

It is highly unlikely that buckling will cause a blowout. In this case, you may have to snap the casing unknowingly, which could lead to a casing leak. Severe buckling doesn't happen often. However, it is a costly mistake.

How to prevent it

When you are on schedule, don't go beyond the limits. A professional stoker will work as fast as possible within safety limits. It's better to arrive at the TD a little later on the first run than to risk a tricky and tiresome fishing trip that will stop the operation for longer. So pay close attention to the downhole weight of the drill and torque measurement - don't be too rough on the drill column so that "bad luck" is less likely to occur.
