Choosing the right drill pipe for the job is as important as any other part of the drill column - and will save you time and money. Here are some things you should consider when selecting drill pipe.
Location-related
Location is one of the first things you should check when selecting drill pipe - which brings up a number of questions you need to consider.
What kind of well?
Is it a high-temperature, high-pressure well or a regular oil and gas well? Is it a geothermal well (hydro bore)? Are you drilling onshore or offshore? From a conventional fixed platform or a floating platform?
What are you drilling?
What type of formation are you drilling into? Some formations contain high levels of acidic H2S gas, which can lead to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) failure or corrosion of steel drill pipe.
How deep do you drill?
The deeper, more complex and more demanding the well, the greater the risk of over-torquing. This can be avoided by using a double shoulder connection on the drill pipe.
The flow rate
The larger the inside diameter of the drill pipe, the greater the ability to bring debris to the surface through the annulus. Choose your drill pipe with circulation in mind.

Financial considerations
Should you buy or rent drill pipe? What are the implications?
If you have a long-term need, it will be cheaper to purchase drilling equipment than to rent it - the cost is more predictable, as renting equipment will require markups and fees in the long run.
On the other hand, there are some obvious benefits to renting drill pipe that should be considered.
You don't have to store unused dummy iron in your own yard
You don't have to worry about inspections and maintenance
You don't have to make a large upfront investment
You will have a wider choice of sizes, types, materials, configurations (OD and ID) and connections
In some countries, rented drilling equipment can be deducted from the current year's taxes If the rig is not activated, you can send the pipe back to the rental company.
Quality
Tubular members for drilling columns are available in a variety of sizes, strengths and weights. Make sure you get your money's worth by choosing quality drill pipe manufactured to API, DS1 or NS1 standards.
